Junkyard Angel -

He built an angel out of junk

He welded every night

In his garage way after dark

Neighbors thought he lost his mind

Pitchfork for the ribcage

Bed frames for the legs

Fingers made of pistons

Car hood angel wings

The head was an old lantern

With silver dollar eyes

It sat on icepick shoulders

Log chains and old barbed wire

A driveshaft for the backbone

Arms of steel rails

Old padlocks and brass bolts

Bike rim for a halo

He build an angel out of junk

He welded every night

Windows flashing through the dark

Neighbors thought he lost his mind

Poison Apple -

I got a wild hair and the night is young

Tonight I let my horses run

I got grass stains on my shirt

And I’m full of piss and vinegar

The sun looks like the evening sky is burning down

And I’m steppin’ out

I got a wildfire burning in my soul

Tonight I let it lose control

I’ll let the night unravel

I’ll eat the poison apple

The full moons out and risin’ high above the clouds

And I’m steppin’ out

I got a wild hair and the night is young

I’m going till my song is sung

I got a heart that won’t be still

I’m gonna get my fill

I’m here to let my tangled mind come unwound

And I’m steppin’ out

Sweet Old Song -

I may forget the names and the places

If I should lose possession of all I own

And I can’t recognize any faces

I’ll always know the words to that old song

Such a sweet old song

There’s something deep inside they couldn’t reach it

Something that is yours and yours alone

Hard lessons there no one could teach you

You had to learn the hard way all along

All alone

If I wind up somewhere that’s unfamiliar

If I should ever lose my way back home

And I can’t tell the tune from the singer

I’ll always know the words to that old song

Such a sweet old song

Fast Food Crow -

It’s a greasy delight

Can always be sure

A long, long line

From here to the door

And I’m gonna get mine

I’m flyin in low

It’s a greasy surprise

I’m a fast food crow

Got a look in my eye

And a black, shiny coat

Come hell or lunch time

Know just where to go

And I’m gonna get mine

I’ll take it to go

It’s a greasy surprise

I’m a fast food crow

It’s a greasy delight

Left on the road

It’s a smellin’ like fries

Perhaps a bit more

Well I’m gonna get mine

I’m flyin’ in low

It’s a greasy surprise

I’m a fast food crow

Station Wagon Blues -

Got a hole in my bucket

And a hitch in my step

I took off a driving

But I’m back where I left

The hill was too long

I left a trail of smoke

Started rollin’ back down

To the bottom of the road

Stranded in the Badlands

Busted down and broke

Ahh…never trust a ride with fake wood on the sides

I abandoned that wagon

For once and for all

Took the license plates off

And dug a small hole

Left the keys in the ignition

And clothes in the trunk

I bid it all good riddance

All I ever owned was junk

Stranded in the Badlands

And shit out of luck

Old Whore in a New Dress -

You got your painted smile

But yer eyes are just a mess

Someone ate the rat

It’s anyone’s guess

Somebody showed their wild card

Way before they bet

But you didn’t come this far

By playing hard to get

Old whore in a new dress

You seen a lot of miles

Got a long and shady past

You could always bum a cigarette

Without wasting a breath

You’d buy this town for nothing down

And sell it back again

Well if you’re gonna play this long

You do what you know best

Old whore in a new dress

You got your painted smile

But yer eyes are just a mess

Somebody done you wrong

Someone got done to them

Well it’s another new town

Somewhere you have never been

Guess we all have been around

A little more or less

Old whore in a new dress

Shadowboxer -

You got a face

Only a mother could love

Got a bad handle

But it fits just like a glove

Born with a mean streak

It’s a chip off the block

You fight your shadow

But nobody’s every won

It’s a one on one

You got a scar

For every day you’ve been around

Got a big heart

And sometimes it took you down

I’ll stand beside you

Any side you may be on

But you fight your shadow

You’ll have to do that on your own

It’s a one on one

You’re getting’ older

You’re getting’ wiser for the wear

You take it slower

You find the time to just be there

To smell the flowers

Take a walk out with your son

He fights his shadow

Someday you’ll show him if you won

A little one on one

January Blues -

When winters are endless and gun metal grey

Snow looks like cold ashes blowin’ away

And we’ll be alright if we ever get through

Through the long stretch of the January blues

They cut back our hours just before holidays

Guess the markets gone sour and somebody must pay

To keep the food on the table and the roof up above

We gotta do what we can or Santa won’t come

When I hear the geese in the dark frozen sky

And I get the feeling everything’ll be alright

When I look in your eyes and I know we’ll get through

Through the last leg of the January blues

Dandelion -

Well I know my neighbors wonder

They all got a crewcut lawn

While I play my heathen music

My boy waters dandelions

Well I’m ready for the country

But I can’t afford to leave

I’m stickin’ out like a sore thumb

Among the uppercrust elite

Well I know my neighbors wonder

‘bout the company I keep

The comings and the goings

A whole family of black sheep

I’m headed out to greener pastures

Plant a garden in the lawn

I’m gonna play my heathen music

Maybe plant a dandelion

Autopilot -

…sleep…the final frontier

For years and millennia man has tried to get to sleep

To knock off for the day

To dream without falling…

Going through the motions

Of an old routine

On a beaten path

Moving in a dream

Walking through an ocean

Blend in with the scene

Tryin’ to just break even

But you’re several miles deep

…there’s room at the top

There’s a long, long line

And we’re all steppin’ off

One sleeper at a time…

Going through the motions

Of an old routine

On a beaten path

You can get used to anything

Even in the off years

We stood there counting sheep

While everyone all followed

We just wanted to believe

To Call A Spade A Spade -

Someone’s let you down

Or you’d be ridin’ high

Someone done you wrong

It happens every time

Your day in the sun

Someone brought the rain

Won’t point at anyone

But someone’s got to blame

To call a spade a spade

When the tables turn around

And you're still sittin’ there

When all the worlds against you

And no one’s playin’ fair

But your days’ gonna come

They’re gonna draw your name

When your turn comes around

And no one else is in the game

To call a spade a spade

Built to Last -

She stood the test of time and hard weather

She cries when it rains

And smiles in the morning sun

She’s haunted by the days and nights forgotten

She’s not hiding no more – or holding nothing back

This time baby’s built to last

She’s turned the page and trying to start over

She picked up the pieces and held ‘em in her hand

Open up the shades let the sun come shining

Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is so vast

And this time baby’s built to last

And when you rise and shine don’t ever falter

Don’t you slide back down

Don’t spend your time in vain

Nothing is more precious than this moment

And now you’ve come around full circle from the past

And this time baby’s built to last

Heart of Man -

Deep inside the heart of man

There’s endless miles of desert sand

Wind blows hard across yer tracks

Don’t stray too far – where you can’t come back

There’s a forest dark in the heart of man

With trees so tall – that no sun gets in

Better leave a trail – to get you back

Don’t you get lost by yer own hand

There’s a mountaintop you can see forever

See a meadow where wild flowers bloom

There’s a crystal stream that leads to a river

Flows to an ocean of endless blue

Deep inside the heart of man

There’s endless miles of sacred land

We came before and we’ll come again

To walk somewhere we’ve never been

One More Last Chance Farewell Tour -

If you slow down you might stop for good

If you nod out at the street light

And should you give up and the bottom drops out

What’s it all worth to have a good life

You got what you want and list its allure

One more last chance farewell tour

Write what you know and do what you do

Your life on the road – now it’s doing you

Garage full of cars and house full or rooms

And there’s no one left to come home to

Gave all you got – now it’s takin’ you more

One more last chance farewell tour

If you slow down you might stop for good

If you nod out in the spotlight

There’s a tear in the dark – a glimpse of the truth

One more last song just to get you through

The heartache won’t numb and there ain’t any cure

One more last chance farewell tour
